October, Week 2

Last week was quite busy (and uneventful on the homeschool front) so I didn't have much to share.  Luckily this week held some photo opportunities.  Unfortunately I forgot to bring my camera to pottery class yesterday where the kids made "stamps" out of Sculpey clay, and then made "elbow bowls" which they then made impressions into with the Sculpey stamps.  Shaun also made a small bird bath which he is quite eager to set out in the yard.  Wishing I had pictures.  Neither  child was keen on using their elbow to hollow out the clay, Shaun only made one bowl and I had to sub in my elbow for Ella's.  I do have pictures of the stamps since those were baked and brought home the same day........here we have a flower, an X (as in marks the spot), and a shark tooth.  Ell is upstairs stamping her play-dough at this very minute.

Today we went on a field-trip with the MOMS Club to Four Town Farm in Seekonk.  This is such a fun trip for the kids.  We started off with a very bumpy tractor ride through the fields.  Shaun was caught being the protective big brother, so cute!

Our next stop was "the carrot house" where they bring the newly harvested carrots for packaging.  The expressions on the kid's faces are priceless, especially since we did this same tour last year.

Carrot houses are mighty intriguing!! Here is the trailer that has come from the fields full of newly harvested carrots.  Next they head on up the conveyer.

Out come the carrots for bagging.  The lovely ladies demonstrated, and then it was the kids turn to step on up to the platform and bag some carrots to take home.

The farm is named as is due to the fact it has land in four towns, (and two states).

The kids learned about all sorts of veggies along the way.
(Our guide was collecting a basket full of goodies for the two pet goats on the farm.)

Lastly, we were off to pick a pumpkin and get lost in the maze of corn.

I am sorry to report that Shaun did not get his father's sense of direction.  Though he had fun choosing our path (because he just "knows it is the right way" we were always led to a dead end.  I was just happy we were not in there alone or I may have gotten a bit panicky over our joint lack of navigational skills.  Ha!

Eventually we made it out, and my boy had such a blast he kept begging to do it again.  (He was however the only one of the group looking for a second round, and so was out-voted.  Poor Shauny.)  Maybe he thought he would wiz right through it if given a second chance.  :)

Oh, and as for the actual book part we continuing our unit on weather, and we discovered Shaun's distaste for subtraction.  It seems as though having to pay attention to the + or - or = sign is just too much work for a six year old not interested in Math.
